Eight reasons you should never skip breakfast

Breakfast is a very important part of our diet. If you are in habit of skipping your breakfast, here are some very important reasons why you should not.

Break-the-fast, after going hours without food you, finally get up in the morning and need lots of energy to kick start the day. Only breakfast can provide you with this energy.

If you're of those who're still not having your breakfast, now is the time to change that habit. Here are some extremely important reasons why!

1.Your blood sugar level drops down in the morning. You need food that can provide you energy to get through the morning. Body needs fuel to keep it running and the night is the longest gap in the refuelling process. To make sure your metabolism keeps on going you need to have something within 2 hours of waking up.

2.  Researchers have found that those who eat breakfast tend to maintain and lose weight. Though people skip breakfast in the hope of losing weight they tend to eat more during lunch or even choose unhealthier options later on which results into weight gain.

3.     Skipping meals leads to a hyper insulin response when calories are consumed later on. That means the level of insulin in blood is more than the glucose level which can lead to metabolic disorder. This in turn results in to fat accumulation.

4.     Hungry employees and students don't do any good at work/school. When you are hungry you are irritable and disinterested which reflects on your work too. Breakfast helps you to wake up and makes you attentive.

5.     If you have breakfast you can burn those calories early! How is that? Well, instead of going hungry till lunch and then hogging on something loaded with calories with fewer hours left in the day to burn it consider refuelling yourself early and getting enough time to burn those calories.

6.     If you have kids, you always want to set a good example for them. By having breakfast on time you will show the quality of leadership by example.

7.     There are food which we have only as a part of our breakfast like cereals, fruits and milk. If you bypass your breakfast you might never get those nutrients.

8.     Oh yes! If you have been skipping breakfast and are in bad mood, you probably should know why. Not having breakfast makes you grouchy. You might not even realise it and keep wondering why you're so irritable!

Apart from all these reasons to have your breakfast there are few things you should always keep in mind:

- Never have dessert for breakfast, it will cause blood sugar loss later on and you will be tempted to eat even more.

- Read the labels carefully, even if it says 'nutritious' look into the details and understand if your body needs that kind of food to start the day.

Stay full, stay happy!

Who is wise?

Dritharashtra asks Vidura how he can identify a wise man. Vidura answers that there are many qualities a wise man has, and that these help identify him, said Kidambi Narayanan, while explaining Vidura's advice to Dritharashtra. A wise man knows what he is capable of doing. He never attempts something he knows he is incapable of doing. He never mourns his losses in life, for he knows that no amount of regret will get him back what is lost. He is not upset by danger. He is not bothered by mockery. He is not taken in by flattery. Whatever he has studied he conveys boldly, fearing none. The wise man is not arrogant on account of his learning.

An unwise man spends like a millionaire, even if he is poor. An unwise man is lazy and does not want to work in order to acquire wealth. He desires wealth, but will not work for it. He who betrays his friends is also an unwise man, according to Vidura. A person, who is always suspicious, is also an unwise man.

He who does not worship his family deity and he who goes to another person's house, uninvited, is unwise. A person, who gives advice, when his counsel has not been sought, lacks wisdom. He who is in the wrong, but criticises others for his mistakes, is unwise. A proud man is unwise. He who refuses to share his food with others is unwise, according to the Vidura niti.

A wise man never makes hasty decisions. He never takes decisions by himself without consulting others. Inputs from others are important when decisions are made, because others may see a problem from a different angle and their perspective will also help. A man should not walk alone, but should be in the company of fellow human beings. It is unwise to remain awake, when everyone else is asleep.

Education does not necessarily make a man wise. The cuckoo lays its eggs in a crow's nest. The crow thinks the eggs are its own. But once the eggs are hatched, the little cuckoo birds fly away. In the same way, a man may think that his education will always be of help to him. But if he has been unwise, then his education will abandon him. In other words, his education will be of no benefit to him in his old age.

Stop Stress in its tracks

According to a recent survey, we are getting used to living with constant stress; not good. However, we are also getting better at managing it; good! Here are the top 10 ways to beat stress:

Take a timeout – Step away from whatever’s making every muscle tense. Even 10 minute helps.

Walk or Dance, lifts weights or do yoga. Exercise gives you a break and undoes some of stress’s bad biological effects.

Talk – Vent to someone close.

Meditate or do 10 minutes of deep breathing twice a day.

Laugh – Call your funniest friend, catch a favorite sitcom, watch crazy cat videos online.

Let it go – One person always gets to you? Take a deep breath and move on. The person you’re letting off the hook is you.

Keep lavender and lemon around – Sprays, oils or the real things. Their calming scents are proven relaxants.

Play with a pet – Just stroking a four legged friend lowers stress and blood pressure.

Squeeze tight – Scrunch up every face or body muscle for 15 seconds, then release. Repeat. Contraction-relaxation unknots you.

Accentuate the positive – Each night, focus on three good things that happened. Be grateful. Say “Thanks” a lot. Life is good.

Why people shout in Anger?

A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take bath found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples smiled and asked.

'Why do people shout in anger shout at each other?'

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, 'Because we lose our calm, we shout.'

'But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner.' asked the saint

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the other disciples. Finally the saint explained, .

'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other to cover that great distance.

What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is either nonexistent or very small...'

The saint continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'

He looked at his disciples and said. 'So when you argue do not let your hearts get distant, Do not say words that distance each other more, Or else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.'

Hope you found this answer both enlightening as well as useful in your life :)

A visit to Book Fair - 2/2 (07th Jan 2012)

Vijaya Bharatham which is considered to be the press wing of RSS was a stall were many oldies were found since it was selling holy books relating to Hindus along with few books relating to success stories of BJP ruling states. An old man who was in-charge of the stall who was having sound knowledge about the books was also considered to be the attracting factor for that stall. The way he volunteered himself explaining about the books to many irrespective of their ages who were visiting the stall including myself made me purchase 7 books in that stall. Point to be noted is most of the books in this stall was written by Swami Chithbavanandhar who had a separate stall as well sponsored by him with limited books compared to Vijaya Bharatham stall.

Another stall which impressed many including myself was MOLI (மொழி) which was selling T-shirts with Tamil fonts printed in it. This is the first time I see Tamil fonts printed in T-shirts & hence I bought 2 which had fonts & யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர் @ affordable price of Rs. 260 each. The same stall also had books relating to “Rights To Information”.

The Reserve Bank of India also had a stall with books relating to the banking exams but since not more than 100 books was there in the stall there by failing to attract the visitors. Not sure how much I purchased Mahathma Gandhi’s “Sathya Sodhanai” before 4 years but currently it was sold for just Rs. 27. Odd to see Mahathma’s words became so cheap while few non-sense books were very expensive.

Another feature which I noted was the stalls installed by / for / to muslims which had ONLY books relating to their religion. Hope that could be the reason for those stall which was not able to attract even a single customer in due course of around 5 hours the time I spent in the book fair. There was one such stall in each row – is it based on the Government’s reservation policy for the minority? If so, why was there not even a single stall by Christians who were supposed to be famous for preaching.

Film Industry’s so called Markandeyan – “Sivakumar’s Diary” with the content of his life journey from the day one till date on his travel in film industry was also playing a role in the book fair along with his elder Son Surya who also wrote a book named “Ippadiku Surya”. I still doubt whether he had come across so many things to write a book.

Another unique stall in the book fair was the one by a Punjabi with scientific related items which attracted many kids / youths. I was not able to control my laughter listening to a conversation by a modern English speaking youth to the shopkeeper in OCEAN stall which was selling things relating to puzzles / mind games.

Customer                     :           What is the cost of this cube?
Shopkeeper                 :           3 X 3 cube costs Rs. 100 & 5 X 5 costs Rs. 250
Customer                     :           Why is this much costly since it’s just a box with few colors sticked on it?
I could  get it for Rs. 20 in the market outside.
Shopkeeper
(reacting in anger /
ignorance of customer) : Sir, this is a puzzle cube where you need to arrange similar colours in one
    side.
Customer                     : Why do I need to arrange when it is already arranged? You guys cheating..
Shopkeeper                 : !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When compared to last year, I was able to see more stalls relating to e-books giving pamphlets about their sites & also education related stalls which was explaining about online courses available from PRE-KG to PG as well as professional courses. Hope in forthcoming book-fair these type of stalls would play a pre-dominant role.
            www.chennaishopping.com
            www.lampsglow.com
            www.nannool.com

Opposite to OSHO stall was a space for writer – reader conversation but unfortunately no writer was available to have a chat due to which the oldies & kids who visited the book-fair was using it to take a break. Former CM Mr. Karunanidhi was well remembered & praised for his dominancy in Tamil literature & vocabulary. Stall named “Kalainjar Karvoolam” was there which had almost all the books written by the great politician cum writer. Last time there was a stall by Periyar university which had books relating to Periyar & also his bio-graphy. But this time the same stall had only books written by Veeramani who is the successor of Periyar who founded the Dravidar Kalagam.

Life will be incomplete without friends; likewise my purchase would be incomplete without sukhabodhananda’s books. So வார்தை இல்லதா ஞானம் (WORDLESS WISDOM) made my purchase complete in the book-fair.

A visit to Book Fair - 1/2 (07th Jan 2012)

Most of us feel happy to visit their relatives to have a change in the daily routine & that’s the reason most of us visit them during weekends. We feel happier when all relatives are together in the same place & that’s the reason we invite all our relatives inspite of small misunderstandings. Reason behind is simple – more the relatives more happy. – These were the thoughts flowed in my mind when I started visiting 35th book exhibition in Chennai for the 2nd time. Even though we used to visit renowned stalls to get books we want, book exhibition is a one stop shop to see all varieties in one place.

35th Chennai book fair started from 05th – 17th January 2012 in St. George Anglo Indian Hr. Secondary school situated exactly opposite to Pachayappan college was my 2nd visit to the book fair. The place chosen is not congested to make the visitors sweat nor too spacious to feel more stalls can be installed. Apart from the grounds where stalls were located, enough space were there for two / four wheeler parking, food court to boost the visitors continue their book thirst & space for around 200 to sit & watch the speakers boast about reading habits.

Apart from convincing factor about the cost among the food courts is a pat to be given to the arrangements that were made to dispose the wastes like empty water bottle, paper plates, tissues, etc. Of course thanks to the common public as well who used only the bins to throw away the wastes which made the place look neat inspite of thousands of people visiting during the day.

Another feature to appreciate is an air conditioned van from LION blood bank with around 5-6 beds which helped people who wanted to donate blood just ahead of food court; this is what we say A GOOD START.

The first stall in the book fair was about NAVEENA VELANMAI (நவீன வேளான்மை) where only men were found busy collecting details about agriculture techniques & also books relating to it. Could be a reason behind the Valluvar’s kural stating – agriculture is the base for the world –
சுழன்றும்ஏர்ப் பின்னது உலகம் அதனால்
உழந்தும் உழவே தலை

Books were available in the stalls which were grouped in 10 rows where each row is named with famous Tamil writers. The only factor which was itching me was why the stalls were installed based on publications rather than author / topic wise which would have eased the public to select the books they wanted. Another doubt which rose in my mind was why the same book is printed by different publications. For e.g. a famous Tamil novel Ponnin Selvan (பொன்னியின் செல்வன்) was found in almost all the publications where there would be no difference in the content.

Daily papers like The Hindu, Times of India, Dhinamalar, Dhinamani & TV channels like Pudhiya Thalaimurai were also contributing each stall for their readers. Got to know that there was a 24 X 7 tamil news channel SATHYAM only after seeing its stall. Not sure the purpose of having HOLLYWOOD stall which was busy selling famous English movies in competing Tamil old movies which was sold in Raj TV stall.

Many branded publishers like Jaico, British council, Higginbotham, Poombugar, Landmark, Manimegalai were also contributing their stalls. Not sure the roles of UCMAS & Billroath hospital stall in the book exhibition.

Among the stalls which were divided based on the publications there were also stalls sponsored by ISHA, ISKCON, CHINMAYANANDA, OSHO, KANJI PERIYAVAR, Kripananda Variyaar’s (GUGASRI PADHIPAGAM). Apart from the general announcement made, the only voice heard through large speakers was a male voice inviting to visit ISHA stall. Books written by Nithyananda were also available for purchase but none showed that much interest to even have a glimpse at it.

Have u realised these things in life?

I have realized that...

tears convey more than what words can every say

lonelier you feel, lonelier the world makes you feel

even if i deserve the reward, i got to beg inorder to get it

words had hurt me more than the wounds i had suffered in life

no matter how many times i pray, i only get what i rightfully deserve

when i am ecstatic about something, there are no people to share it

a face is not as important as it is made to believe

it's not always a coward who gives up a fight; sometimes smart people too

kids are never at fault; they just mirror our's

one person's misery is another person's merriment

every relationship has an expiry date
